John A. Barthuly

August 24, 1929 — July 15, 2017

John A. Barthuly, 87, a life long resident of the City of Fond du Lac, passed away quietly with his immediate family on Saturday evening, July 15, 2017. John was born August 24, 1929 in Fond du Lac, son of John and Katherine Popp Barthuly. He married Genevieve “Jené” Marie Supple on October 14, 1950 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fond du Lac. Jene’, the love of his life, passed away July 29, 2011.



John graduated from Goodrich High School in 1947. He joined the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War where he received commendations for outstanding service. John joined the Fond du Lac Fire Department in June of 1956 and retired as Assistant Fire Chief in July of 1985. He was instrumental in developing the City of Fond du Lac Fire Department Paramedic Service. John was on many community Boards of Directors relating to the fire service and Fond du Lac athletics. He was a proud member of the American Legion, the Eagles, the Elks, and the Knights of Columbus. John was very involved in the running of Shakey’s Pizza Parlor in Green Bay. Many happy times were spent with family during his years at Shakey’s and many friendships made.



John loved wood working. He spent many hours building beautiful furniture and gifts for family and friends. He could be found in his workshop daily creating hand-crafted pieces. He spent his life creating keepsakes which can be found in the homes of everyone he loved.



John is survived by his four daughters, Jennifer (Jim) McKelvie, Catherine (John ) Rutlin, Renee (Douglas) Wendt, and Lisa (Mathew) Mueller; his son, John Anthony “Tony” (Helen) Barthuly; grandchildren, Shawn (Stefanie) McKelvie, Keven (Maggie) McKelvie, Kiara Lee, Nicholas Lee, Caitlin (David) Caves, Jené Barthuly and fiancé, Ben Klaske, John “Bart” (Bree) Barthuly, Tony (Theresa) Wendt, Jacalyn (Robert) Coleman, Cassandra (Brock) Rademann, PJ Mueller; and numerous great grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers, Walter (Pat) Barthuly, Herbert (Dolores) Barthuly; sister, Esther (Herman) Burkhardt; brother-in-law, John (Dolores) Supple; and his buddy Joe Supple; numerous nieces, nephews and friends in Eagle River, WI and Punta Gorda, FL.



John was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jené; grandson, Patrick McKelvie; numerous great grandchildren; son-in-law, Michael Lee; brothers and sisters-in-law, Alex (Betty) Barthuly and Otto (Vivian) Barthuly, sisters and brothers-in-law, Dorothy (Gordon) Zwicky and Natalie (Adolf) Hunt; in-laws, Catherine (Bernard) Klinzing, Mary (Alex) Semenas, and Joan (Paul) Manowske.



The visitation will be held from 4:00 – 8:00 PM on Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home and again on Thursday from 9:30 – 11:00 AM at the church.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 20, 2017 at Holy Family Church, 271 4th Street Way, Fond du Lac. Entombment will follow in the Shrine of Rest Mausoleum, Ledgeview Memorial Park. American Legion Post #75 will conduct military honors.



In lieu of flowers, memorials are being established for John at the Fond du Lac Fire Department, the Bereavement Services at Agnesian Healthcare, and the Multiple Sclerosis Society.



The family extends a special thank you the Aurora Hospice services for easing John’s end of life.
