Alfred M. Schroeder

Alfred M. Schroeder, 84, formerly of 166 5th Street, died Tuesday, May 30, 2006, at the Fond du Lac Lutheran Home where he had been a resident for the past 3 years. He was born March 26, 1922, in Fond du Lac, the son of Victor and Arpa Miritz Schroeder. In June of 1953, he married Helen J. Lamb in Fond du Lac. Prior to his retirement in 1988, he was employed by the Fond du Lac School Board Maintenance Department as a painter. Alfred enlisted in the US Navy and served from 1942 to 1946, attaining the rate of AOM (Aviation Ordinance First Class). Most of his service and tour of duty was in the Pacific as a "waist-gunner" with USN Patrol Squadron Eighty-One, Group #11, the "Black Cats" aboard a Catalina PBY-5A Patrol Bomber. He saw much action flying at night in forward areas of Guadalcanal, Bougainville, Munda, and flying the "Slot" islands corridor. His squadron received three separate unit citations and air medals from the staff of Admiral Nimitz for meritorious achievement, courage, devotion, and service to his country. He was a member of Trier-Puddy American Legion Post #75. Surviving is his wife, Helen, five sons, Robert F. Schroeder of Columbia City, IN, Richard P. (Sandy) Schroeder, Charles J. "Gordy" (Jeanine) Schroeder, James Schroeder, and David Schroeder, all of Fond du Lac. He is further survived by seven grandchildren, Rochelle (D.J.) Ohm of Cokato, MN, Charles G. (Gina) Schroeder of Fond du Lac, Jeremiah Schroeder of Jacksonville, NC, Timothy, Nicole, Rachel, and Ashley Schroeder, all of Fond du Lac. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren and a special family friend, Tony Olin, of Columbia City, IN. His parents, three brothers, Howard, Victor, and Gordon, and one sister, Agnes Gores, preceded him in death.



Visitation for Mr. Alfred M. Schroeder will be on Saturday, June 3, 2006 from 10 am to 12 noon at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home. Funeral services will be on Saturday at 12 noon at the funeral home. The Rev. Dean Desilet will officiate and burial will be in St. Charles Cemetery. A memorial has been established in Mr. Schroeder's name.
