Charles J. Smith, Jr., 89, of Fond du Lac, died Monday, August 19, 2013 at Fond du Lac Lutheran Home. He was born June 6, 1924 in Fond du Lac, the son of Charles Sr. and Edna Kippenhan Smith. On July 31, 1943 he married Doris L. Rebedew and she preceded him in death on October 14, 2009. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He worked as a carpenter and was a member of the North Central Carpenter's Union. He was also a member of Church of Peace. Charles enjoyed cooking, baking, tinkering on cars, building and remodeling, playing the accordion and harmonica and singing. Charles was known throughout the neighborhood as the go to guy for any tool that someone might have needed.He is survived by six children, Linda Zabel, Raytown, MO, Carol (LaVerne) Andrew, Waupun, Denny (Faye) Smith, Fond du Lac, Jeffery (Judy) Smith, Ladson, SC, Randall (Linda) Smith, Van Dyne, Sharon (Chris) Paul, Fox Lake; 18 grandchildren, Nettie Yewell, Darleen Marsh, Bruce (Sandy) Zabel, Lisa (Scott) Phelps, Debra (Brad) Spoerke, Dale (Beth) Andrew, Keith Smith, Rhonda Smith, Rhonda Mingus, Angela Smith, Rebecca (Clinton) Gamsby, Jessica Smith, Cory, Eric and Nicole Smith, Kortnea and Desirae Adams, Benjamin Paul; 24 great grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; three brothers, Sonny, Lake City, FL, Robert, Smithville, TN, James, Oshkosh; one sister, Ruby, California. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Doris; two grandchildren, Brenden Adams and Kimberly Smith; four brothers, Chester, Paul, Richard and George Smith; three sisters, Olive, Pearl and Crystal.



The visitation will be held from 4:00 "“ 7:00 PM on Thursday, August 22, 2013 at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home and again on Friday from 10:00 "“ 11:00 AM at the funeral home. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 23, 2013 at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home with Rev. Jennifer C. M. Dawson officiating. Burial will follow in Ledgeview Memorial Park Cemetery.The family extends a special thank you to the staff of the Fond du Lac Lutheran Home and Agnesian Hospice for the care and support given to Charles and his family over the last couple years.Uecker-Witt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
