George E. Hackbarth

August 9, 1927 — February 21, 2022

George Ervin Hackbarth passed away in his sleep February 21, 2022.

George was born in the Town of Ashford, on August 9, 1927, the son of the late William and Mary (née Beeschke) Hackbarth. He grew up on the family farm and enjoyed telling stories about his childhood on the farm. George also told stories of being educated in the “College of Knowledge” a one-room schoolhouse and walking 2 miles each way.

George joined the U.S. Army on his eighteenth birthday (Aug. 9, 1945) and served his nation as a military police officer until his discharge in 1947. Upon return to civilian life George married Beverly (née Rentmeister) March 20, 1948.

George was the Assistant Works Manager at Wells Manufacturing until 1961. He became a journeyman electrician and worked for Leasa Electric until his retirement. George had a knack for repairing any mechanical object. His motto seemed to be “anything broken can be fixed.” His innate mechanical ability was always on display whether it was repairing automobiles, building “go-carts” for his granddaughters, or buying lawnmowers to rebuild and sell.

George loved the West, a cowboy at heart, dreamed of traveling to see the Rocky Mountains and the Great Plains of the old west. He succeeded in that dream by numerous trips with his family to the Grand Canyon, Death Valley, Yellowstone National Park and (not to be missed) Dodge City, Kansas.

George was preceded in death by his parents (William and Mary) and Beverly (wife) and five sisters: Gertrude Engels, Dorothy Lefeber, Joyce Lefeber, Mary Vorderbruggen, Janet Flitter; and three brothers Lester Hackbarth, Elmer "Butch" Hackbarth, and William E. Hackbarth.

George is survived by his sons: Michael (Debra), Mark (Cheryl), and Brian; along with four granddaughters (Meghan Hackbarth, Amy Hackbarth-Sanders, Dana Cubitt, and Kelly Miller) and eight great grandchildren (Liam and Sofia Will; Geneva and Everett Sanders; Brooks and Ellery Miller; Lyra and Ezra Cubitt).
