James P. Carew

James P. CarewIn loving memory of devoted husband, father and friend James P. Carew, who died unexpectedly on Wednesday evening at Watertown Hospital. He was born January 19, 1924, in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, a son of John Rexford and Helen Sweitzer Carew. He graduated from Chippewa High School in 1941, and attended the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire and Madison. He served as a Sergeant in the United States Army Signal Corps and the United States Air Force for 3 ½ years in World War II. On June 21, 1947, he married Jeanette Cote at Holy Ghost Church in Chippewa Falls. She preceded him in death on January 13, 2003. He later married Lucia A. DeVoe Kohlman on December 26, 2003.James was employed by J. C. Penney Co. from 1946 to 1963 in Chippewa Falls, WI; Richland Center, WI; Britton, South Dakota and Minneapolis, Minnesota. He joined the Tempo Store Division of Gamble-Skogmo, Inc. in 1963 to 1969 and was assigned to stores in St. Paul, Minnesota; Canton, Illinois and Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. As manager, he opened Fond du Lac's first discount store, Tempo, in 1964. In January 1970, he started Fond du Lac's free newspaper, the Action Advertiser, and in 1973, the company's Action Printing division. He was joined in that business by his wife Jeanette, daughter Julie, and three sons: David, Thomas and Robert. The family-owned business was first located at 59 and 61 North Main Street. In 1980 it moved to its present quarters at N6637 Rolling Meadows Drive. The plant has undergone a number (4) of expansions to accommodate the growth of business. Organizations he belonged to included the Elks Club, American Legion Post No. 75 of Fond du Lac, Eagles, Lions Club, Noon Kiwanis Club, Knights of Columbus Council #664, Holy Name Society, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Wisconsin Advertising Publishers Association. He served as President of the National Association of Advertising Publishers, and served on the Executive Committee for two terms.His is survived by his loving wife Lucia; three sons and daughters-in-law, David and Christine Carew of Fond du Lac, Thomas and Helen Carew of Fond du Lac, and Robert and Crystal Carew of Green Lake; his daughter and son-in-law, Julie Ann and Michael Johnson of Fond du Lac; nine grandchildren, Benjamin Kaestner, John, Jennifer, Matthew, Kelly (Kevin) Colwin, Kimberly, Robyn, Megan (fiancé Jonathan Marquardt), and Janelle Carew; two step-sons, Steven (Jana) Kohlman of Clarks Grove, MN, and Randall (Deborah) Kohlman of Hartford, WI; three step-daughters, Linda Homs of Kenosha, Sandra (Steve) Gruening of Carmel, IN; and Lisa (Harvey) Villa of Gilbert, AZ; nine step-grandchildren, Austin and Logan Villa, Amanda and Douglas Pearson, Christopher, Daniel, and James Gruening, and Zachary and Joshua Kohlman. He is further survived by a brother, Patrick Carew of Bloomer, WI and a sister, Sue (Joe) Perez of Oak Park, IL. His parents; his first wife, Jeanette; two sisters, Helen Thorn and Rosemary Halblieb; and an infant brother, William, preceded him in death.
