Joanne M. Walters

August 6, 1935 — March 20, 2013

Joanne Marie (Breiner) Walters), 77, of Fond du Lac died peacefully in her sleep at the Hospice Home of Hope on March 20, 2013. Joanne was born August 6, 1935 in Mandan, North Dakota, the daughter of Javan and Eleanor Breiner. During WWII she, along with her mother and sister, moved to Oshkosh, WI where her father joined them upon his return from serving the country. She graduated from Oshkosh High School in 1953 before marrying her high school sweetheart, Donald J. Walters, on October 29, 1958. Not long after, her first child was born and she lovingly and joyfully assumed the role as mother to him and, eventually, his 3 younger siblings. She was a stay-at-home mom until her youngest child was in elementary school. During her years at home with her children she filled her days sewing or patching clothes for her children; visiting the library or pool; serving as Cub Scout Den Mother; and attending parades, practices, and tournaments to watch her husband direct and her sons march with the Marauders Drum and Bugle Corp. In 1978, her family moved from Oshkosh to Fond du Lac. There, she was employed by Warehouse Specialists, Inc. and fully enjoyed being a Customer Service Representative for 22 years before retiring in 2000. In the last 22 years of her life she enthusiastically anticipated the births of each of her 8 grandchildren. Joanne will be remembered for her passion for reading, gentle nature, beautiful smile, and commitment to her family. Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, sister Jean (David) Erdmann, mother-in-law Marion Walters, father-in-law Norman Walters, brother-in-law Lt. Col. Stanley Walters, brother-in-law Norman "Bucky" Walters, Jr., sister-in-law Elaine Farrell, brother-in-law Joe Farrell, and nephews Thomas and Mark Walters. Those Joanne leaves behind to cherish her memory include her husband of 54 years and children Timothy (Linda) Walters of Ansbach, Germany; Michael (Patricia) Walters of Stevens Point, WI; Dr. Jeffrey (Rebecca) Walters of Fond du Lac, WI; and Lori (Timothy) Walters-Kramer of Plattsburgh, NY. She will be missed by her grandchildren Elizabeth and Christopher Walters of Ansbach, Germany; Zachary and Austin Walters of Fond du Lac, WI; Cody and Cory Walters of Stevens Point, WI, and Owen and Annaliese Walters-Kramer of Plattsburgh, NY. She also leaves behind her sister-in-law and friend, Jackie Walters, as well as many nephews and nieces.

A private service was held for the family on March 23, 2013 at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home, when they laid Joanne to rest at the Shrine of Rest Chapel Mausoleum in Ledgeview Memorial Park, Fond du Lac. Joanne's family would like to thank the nurses and staff of the Hospice Home of Hope in Fond du Lac for all their care and love in making her final weeks as peaceful and comfortable as possible.
