Oliver W. "Ollie" Westby

Oliver "Ollie" Wendell Westby died of natural causes on December 10, 2013 at 96. Ollie was born in the Town of Turtle, Rock County, Wisconsin on April 22, 1917 to James W. and Caroline Westby. He was one of 7 children, 2 girls and 5 boys. He graduated from Janesville High School in 1936, and attended the University of Wisconsin Extension and Milton College. He married Elizabeth (Betty) Mattson of Janesville in 1940. Ollie served in the U.S. Air Force as a flight instructor and member of the Ferry Command, delivering airplanes in WWII. He graduated from Randolf Field, San Antonio, Texas and was commissioned as a flight officer. He served in China, Burma, and India. Besides his family, Ollie considered his service in the Air Force his greatest pride. When he returned from service he was a salesman for Chamber and Owen in Janesville, Wisconsin for 20 years. He then became a successful American Family Insurance agent in Janesville for 20 years. He retired to his vacation home in Boulder Junction, Wisconsin in 1984. He lived his last 3 years at Lasata Heights in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. Ollie enjoyed gardening, fishing, golfing, card-playing, and telling 'Air Force' stories. Most of all he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His positive attitude and joy for life was an inspiration for all who knew him. He is survived by sons James O. Westby (Sharon) of Santa Barbara, California, Charles W. Westby (Jean) of Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin and daughter Carolyn E. Holloway (William) of Cedarburg, Wisconsin. He is further survived by 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Oliver was preceded in death by all of his brothers and sisters, grandson Jeffrey Westby, daughter-in-law Elizabeth Westby, and his loving wife Betty. Ollie and Betty were married for almost 68 years before her death in 2008



Visitation for Oliver "Ollie" Wendell Westby will be on Friday, December 20, 2013, from 11:30 to 12:30 PM at Sacred Heart Church, 678 Western Avenue, Fond du Lac. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:30 PM on Friday at the church. A spring burial will take place in the Cemetery of the Pines, Boulder Junction, Vilas County, Wisconsin.
