Arvo A. Vehmas, 87, of Fond du Lac, WI died Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at the Hospice Home of Hope. He was born in Tampere, Finland, on September 6, 1923. He was the son of Arvo and Aino (nee Kandell) Vehmas. He served in the Finnish Air Force from 1942 to 1945. He married Anneli Kauppila on November 10, 1946. In 1954, they came to America and settled in Waukegan, IL with their two children. Arvo worked at OMC-Johnson Motors as a machinist until his retirement in 1983. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Anneli, a son, Andrew (Kiki) Vehmas of Greenfield, WI, a daughter, Heli (Elliot) Marcelain of Fond du Lac, a grandson, Peter Vehmas, granddaughters, Amie (Wesley) Meenk and Sophia Vehmas, and great-granddaughters, Courtney and Kelsey Meenk. He is also survived by a sister, Hilppa, three nieces and two nephews, and a brother-in-law, Jorma in Finland. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Helvi, and a grandson, Steven Marcelain.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Cremation has taken place. Memorials in his name may be directed to JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association) or the Hospice Home of Hope would be greatly appreciated.
