Barbara J. Hammer

Barbara Jean (Boughton) Hammer, age 81, of Fond du Lac, passed away on Saturday, May 23, 2026 at her home.

She was born March 14, 1945 in Beaver Dam, WI, the daughter of Clifford and Jennie (Johnson) Boughton. She graduated from Beaver Dam High School in 1963 and continued her education at UW Oshkosh, earning a bachelor’s degree in education. On June 15, 1968 she married Edward P. Hammer at St. Peter’s Church in Beaver Dam, together they shared 58 beautiful years of marriage.

Barb spent a number of years working as a teacher at Rosenow Elementary before pausing to become the most amazing stay-at-home mother. She eventually got back into teaching at Fond du Lac Christian School by volunteering as the school’s art teacher. Barb was deeply passionate about her family and she attended nearly every event involving her children and grandchildren. It brought her great joy to be actively involved in raising her grandchildren and grandfurbabies through babysitting regularly. Barb was an excellent artist as she enjoyed creating beautiful cards for her loved ones that would always include a personalized poem.

She enjoyed reading the bible, journaling and writing poetry, drawing and painting, watching the Badgers, Brewers and Packers, and spending time with family and friends. She was known for creating pillow-sized stuffed animal Cardinal birds for seniors on the Fond du Lac girls basketball team, and went on to make scores of the birds over the years.

Barb was known for being loving, selfless and non-judgemental. She was a devout Christian who attended Community Church of Fond du Lac and tirelessly strived to be closer to God. It brings the family peace to know she is now in her eternal home.

She is survived by her loving husband Ed, who immediately paused his active life to become a caretaker himself; her children, Tom Hammer, Cliff (Nicole Miller) Hammer, Lisa (Zack) Vercauteren, and Joanie Hammer; grandchildren, Eli (Emma Theis) Margaret-Verrett, Owen Margaret-Verrett, Molly and Carter Vercauteren; brother-in-law, Henry Braker; brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and other cherished relatives. She often mentioned how excited she was to reunite with those that had gone before her, including her parents and two sisters, Joan (George) Allemand and Judy Braker.

The visitation will be held Friday, May 29, 2026 from 9:00 – 11:30 AM at Community Church, N6717 Streblow Drive in Fond du Lac. The memorial service will follow at 11:30 AM on Friday at the church. Cremation has taken place.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in Barb’s name.
