Frederick "Fred" Luehring

February 6, 1946 — February 28, 2026

Frederick “Fred” Luehring of Mayville passed away on February 28, 2026. Fred was born on February 6, 1946 to Clarence and Mary Jane Luehring (nee Weinberger) at Hustisford Hospital. He was named after his Uncle Frederick who died a hero in WWII. He spent the first part of his childhood in Leroy and attended church at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church. Fred enjoyed church so much, he aspired to be a priest and left home at the age of 13 to attend Mt. Calvary Catholic Seminary. He graduated in 1964. Fred then briefly attended college at UW-Oshkosh. Instead of the priesthood, Fred enlisted into the Army and became an intelligence officer. He served from 1966 until 1970. Since he knew Latin from his days at seminary, Fred was placed at the Defense Language Institute, Presidio base, in Monterey, California. There he learned four other languages speaking six in total with his main language being Czechoslovakian. Fred then spent time at an air force base in Texas learning radios. He was stationed in Germany near the Czech border in a radio tower at a base on top of Schneeberg just outside of Bischofsgruen. Fred worked the radios as an interpreter and code breaker. There, he met his wife, Edeltraud Zapf. Fred was honorably discharged in 1970.

After Fred returned to the United States, he became employed at Mayville Engineering Company where he worked as an engineer and estimator for 45 years. Fred was very committed to his job working until the age of 71 before retiring. He was hoping to get the #1 parking spot but never obtained that goal, so he gave up and retired. Fred lived in Mayville for the last 51 years of his life. He had many hobbies during his life including trap shooting, sheepshead, chess, pool, metal detecting, canoeing, playing board games, viewing the stars with his telescope, and in earlier years, sailing his daysailer, the Scorpion. He most loved flying drones and RC planes with his grandson. There wasn’t a tree he couldn’t climb to get his planes out. Fred was a softy for stray cats and often had a few too many that he took in. Many will remember him frequenting the grocery store and Kwik Trip in Mayville a few times a day. He loved westerns and was glued to home shopping channels buying things he didn’t realize he needed. Fred’s greatest joy during his final years was spending time with his grandson. The two had a lot of fun together and were very close.

Fred has a daughter, Angela Luehring (Justin Hintz) of FDL. He is survived by his life partner, Edeltraud Luehring (nee Zapf) of Mayville, brother, Bill Luehring (Dianne Munson), his daughter, Angela Luehring (Justin Hintz), grandson, Liam Hintz, all of Fond du Lac, and nephew, Jacob Luehring (Shaddai Amor) of Madison. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Finn Hintz.

Fred was a private man full of dry humor who kept to himself. He had a lot of talents. Fred will be dearly missed. Fred was a believer in Christ as his Savior, and we can’t wait to see him again someday. Bye, Dad and Opa, we love you.
