Janet L. “Jan” Schaeve, 85, died Monday, September 15, 2025, at The Kathy Hospice in West Bend with family by her side. Jan was born in Kenosha on December 22, 1939. At five months of age, she was chosen by God to be the adopted daughter of Matthew and Mabel (Lapene) Berg, receiving the name of Janet Louise Berg. Jan attended public school in Fond du Lac, graduating in 1958 from Goodrich High School. She then attended Fond du Lac Vocational School of Practical Nursing, graduating in 1959. As an LPN, Jan spent 50 years at St. Agnes Hospital, the Fond du Lac Clinic, and Associated Physicians, all in Fond du Lac.
Jan met Jim Schaeve on a blind date, then fell in love. They were married on April 23, 1960, at St. Mary’s Church in Fond du Lac. Jim preceded her in death on January 9, 2014. They were blessed with five children, twelve grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren.
Jan was active in the Women’s Typographical Auxiliary, and the Fond du Lac Medical & Dental Society. She liked 40’s and 50’s music, cooking, reading and travelling, especially to Hawaii. She also enjoyed making floral arrangements, and Christmas ornaments. Retiring in 2005, she then became a Foster Grandparent through ADVOCAP and enjoyed 5 years at Rosenow School. In 2010, Jan & Jim relocated to Hartford to live with family. In Hartford, she was a “grandma-helper” at Rossman Elementary School for kindergarten and first grade. She loved spending time with family, three lifelong friends (Helen, Judie, and Mary), and loved going to concerts (Michael Bublé, Brett Eldredge, the Little River Band, and the Rat Pack).
Survivors include her two sons, James (Kathy) Schaeve, and Joel (Jenny) Schaeve; two daughters, Julie (John) Schmitz and Jeanine (Jesse) Egan; twelve grandchildren, Jessica (Zach), Jimmy (Kirsten), Jimmy, Ashley (Rob), Jennie (Adam), Steven (Ashley), Kevin (Kristena), Nichole (Fred), Zach, Leah, Drew, and Sydney; and twelve great-grandchildren. Jan is further survived by her brother-in-law, Butch (Dale) Schaeve, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews. In addition to her parents, and husband of 55 years, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Jackilyn Webster; two sisters-in-law, Pat (George) Reitz, and Ginna (Lloyd) Putz.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial in Jan’s memory will be established for The Kathy Hospice.
