John J. Vercauteren

John J. Vercauteren, age 80, died on Sunday, March 3, 2024, after a long battle with cancer.

John was born on June 22, 1943, to the late Marjorie (Joyce) and the late John Vercauteren in De Pere, WI, where he spent his younger years. John’s father died at an early age and his mother married the late Robert Jansen.

After graduating from St. Norberts and Abbot Pennings High School, John joined the Army and served during the Vietnam War. After being discharged from service, John attended several colleges and universities graduating from the University of Chicago School of Respiratory Therapy and also from Ottawa University, Ottawa, Kansas. He worked at several medical institutions throughout his career. After retiring, he served as the executive director of the Blandine House and was later on the board of directors. 

John is survived by his wife, Carrie Strong; four children, Kim Wietor of Lomira, Scott (Lanna) Vercauteren of Campbellsport, Zack (Lisa) Vercauteren and Kelly (Jon) Hagman, both of Fond du Lac; eleven grandchildren, Brian (Katy) Wietor, Kristina Wietor, Stephanie (Anthony) Brockman. Nicole Wietor, Trenton Casl, Lexi Vercauteren, Ally Vercauteren, Molly Vercauteren, Carter Vercauteren, Paige Hagman, and Blake Hagman; two step great grandchildren, Petra and Callie Brockman. 

John is further survived by his two sisters, Mary Kay (Joseph) Morgan and Georgian (John) Smits; mother-in-law, Marjorie Strong; two brothers-in-law, Mark Strong and Scott (Sarah) Strong; sister-in-law, Tammie (Richard) Taylor; his great friends, Dr. Larry and Debra Heller; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. John was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Colleen Reeves; and father-in-law, Stephen Strong.

The visitation will be held on Friday, March 15, 2024, from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home and again on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM at Sons of Zebedee Church, W5882 Church Road, Fond du Lac, WI 54937. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow visitation on Saturday at the church at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at Rienzi Cemetery.  

Memorials can be made in John’s name to the Blandine House or the Sons of Zebedee Church.
