Melvin C. Freund, 86, of 375 Weis Avenue, died Sunday, March 28, 2004, at the Fond du Lac Lutheran Home. He was born on November 18, 1917, in Fond du Lac, the son of Michael and Rose Mand Freund. On April 25, 1942, he married Lorraine Klima at St. Mary's Church in Fond du Lac. They had a 60th wedding anniversary party with family and friends on April 25, 2002. She preceded him in death on August 19, 2002.After high school he had several local jobs and then spent about one year with the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in Blackwell, Wisconsin. After that he joined the Army Air Corps and spent two years based in England during World War II. He later was stationed in Korea during the Korean War. Upon returning stateside, he had various assignments with the Air Force as a Master Sergeant, including bases in Chicago, Illinois, Waco, Texas, ROTC at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, and Shreveport, Louisiana.After retiring from the Air Force in 1962, he returned to Fond du Lac where he worked for a short time as assistant manager at St. Mary's Bowling Alley, and then he worked 17 years at Mercury Marine, retiring in 1980. Mel was an avid swimmer, bowler, and golfer, and in fact got three holes-in-one three years in a row on different area par three golf courses between his 80th and 82nd birthdays. He was a proud Catholic member of Holy Family parish, a member of Knights of Columbus Council #664 for 50 years plus, and a member of the men's Holy Name Society.He is survived by one daughter, Marsha (Jim) Meisenburg of Eagle River, WI; 4 sons, Thomas (Carol) and Terrance of Fond du Lac, Melvin Jr. (Barbara) of Phoenix, AZ, and Andrew (Geralyn) of Mesa, AZ. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, Theresa Squiller, Robert (Jodi) Meisenburg, Julie, Jennifer, Michael, Joseph, Laura, Rachel, Samantha, and Emma Freund. Also surviving are three great-grandchildren, Kimberli and Trevor Squiller, and Mason Meisenburg. He is further survived by a sister, Caroline Mueller, of Tucson, AZ, and nieces and nephews. His parents, wife, 4 brothers, and 4 sisters preceded him in death.



Visitation for Mr. Melvin C. Freund will be on Wednesday, March 31, 2004, from 4 to 8 pm at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home. Funeral services will be on Thursday, April 1, 2004, at 10:30 am from Uecker-Witt Funeral Home, and Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am at St. Mary's Church. The Rev. Victor Capriolo of Holy Family parish will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. A memorial has been established.
