Melvin G. Geschke

Oct 24, 1948 — Oct 5, 2026

Melvin G. Geschke, age 77, of Lomira, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 5, 2026, at St. Agnes Hospital, with his loving wife, Patricia, at his side.

Melvin was born on October 24, 1948, in Fond du Lac, WI. “Mel” was born and raised as a farmer and spent a lot of time at his grandparents’ farm in Theresa. He is a graduate of Lomira High School. Mel spent the first 50 years of his life working in farming. He then transitioned to work at Quad/Graphics for 22 years until he retired. On November 26, 1980, Mel married Patricia Ann (Melms) Matty at the Church of Peace in Fond du Lac, WI.

Mel was nicknamed “Willie” (after Willie Mays) during his softball days. When he wasn’t working on the farm, he’d be playing ball. When it was his turn at bat, the outfield automatically knew to back up. Willie could hit a home run over the fence, out of the park and across the street. He was a huge fan of the Milwaukee Brewers, Bob Uecker and the Green Bay Packers. Willie and his wife, “Patty”, attended many Brewers games over the years, wearing their matching, personalized Brewer jerseys. They always watched the games together at home, when they weren’t at a game in person.

When you ask family about a memory of Willie, the answers are often either of fishing or geocaching. His kids, grandkids, nieces and nephews, will all tell you a story of fishing with Willie in his boat or off the dock during cabin week vacations. He was ready and stocked with supplies for everyone to participate. ‘No Mikey Keepers in this boat’, he would tease.

Willie and Patty traveled all over the United States. Geocaching along the way, they have discovered one in each of the 48 contiguous United States. Together, they had collected 12,678 geocaches, all under the name WI pattymel. Willie loved geocaching and was a member of the WGA (Wisconsin Geocaching Association). He looked forward to the puzzle adventures and beautiful locations it would lead him to, with Horicon Marsh being one of his favorites. Willie also placed 599 caches of their own for others to find. This earned them 2,734 ‘Favorite’ points from other geocachers. The creative, silly spin that he put into his designs, were definitely a highlight within the caching community.

Willie loved being on road trips with his wife, especially to see Freedom Rocks across the United States. They visited all 99 counties in Iowa to see every Freedom Rock in the state. They even bought a personalized brick in honor of our veterans and their families. It has been placed at the base of the first Freedom Rock in Arizona. Their cross-country travels drew them to waterfalls, eagle searches and casinos. Willie seemed to have a special kind of luck for the latter.

Everyone was well aware of Willie’s sweet tooth. His favorites were orange slices, Circus Peanuts, Hershey bars, and especially, ice cream. He couldn’t resist and often, after a trip to the store, he would quip to his wife, ‘they jumped into my cart’.

Willie will be remembered by family and friends as being the kindest, strong, patient, funny and adventurous person they have been fortunate to have known.

Melvin is survived by his wife, of 45 years, Patricia Ann (Melms) Matty; five children, Kim Adelmeyer of Phoenix, AZ, Terence Matty, Jr., of Crivitz, Lynn (Dan) Card of Woodbury, MN, Daniel (Melody) Matty of Fond du Lac, and Annette (Clint) Schneider of Wautoma; four brothers, Steve (Ann) Geschke of Lomira, John (Peggy) Geschke of Lomira, Jeff (Sue) Hinojosa of Brownsville, and Brian (Patty) Hinojosa of Lomira; three sisters, Lucille (William) Bebow of Fond du Lac, Shirlamay (Dan) Ticks of Oakfield, Melanie (Marvin) Feucht of Mayville; nine grandchildren, Cory, Kelsey, Allyson, Lindsay, Austin, Megan, Dustin, Keira and Chloe; four great-grandchildren, Lily, Evalynn, Aiden and Amara; and other relatives and friends. He held a special place in his heart for his son-in-law, Tom Adelmeyer, who is lovingly remembered, as well as his late brother, Robert Geschke.
